Circus Clowns, Heart Surgeons, and 'B' vs. 'G'

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a break from politicking around Hurricanes and all those helpless hurricane victims.

Plus I'm also tired of hearing about rising oil prices and the energy crisis.

And I could use a break from all the flu pandemic chatter.

So I ain't talking about any of those things today.

But... there is one bit of controversy you might like to hear about:  An Italian medical study shows that having a circus clown in the operating room calms little kids down before surgery. But wouldn't you know it, doctors and nurses are upset.  "The majority of the staff was opposed to continuing the program because of perceived interference with the procedures of the operating room," says the report.

Don't you think the docs are just jealous?  After all, can you think of anything stuffier than an operating room doc?  So next time you're in for some surgery, tell your doc he could get some bedside manner tips from a circus clown.  (Please, wait til after your surgery is done...)

OK, let's get working...

Link Your Serial Devices, Via Wireless

Let's say you've got a meter, a weigh scale or a PLC, and you want the data without the wires. Our rough and tough 802.11g Vlinx serial servers give you precisely that capability:

- Important Tech Details about Wireless: 802.11b vs. 802.11g...

If you're shopping for industrial serial servers, you need to pay attention to the "G" and the "B".  Let me explain.  "B" is an 11Mbps channel, G is 54Mbps. 54 Meg G is backwards compatible with 11 Meg B devices.  It negotiates its data rate down to a B level.

Please Note! If you have a "G" infrastructure, and add a "B" node, it may slow the entire network down. So, while your serial device may care less whether it's 9600 baud data is traveling over an 11Mb or 54Mb channel, the other stuff on that network will have to work at a reduced performance level.  If in doubt, get "G."

Also notice that our Vlinx wireless line is in a manly, aluminum DIN mount case. Wide range power, nice connectors. A real industrial product. When you're deploying wireless in an industrial environment I don't think you should be worried about power jacks falling out or how to velcro a commercial market device into your panel.

While we're talking wireless tech - our chief rocket scientist is just finishing up a nice introductory white paper on 802.11. It explains the differences between B, G and A, covers topologies for small and large installations and explains all the security acronyms you need to know to impress your friends and neighbors. If you'd like a copy as soon as it's done, just reply with your mailing address.

- Mini Wireless and Wired Serial Servers:

Don't miss the brand new RS-232 to Ethernet and RS-232 to 802.11b single port serial server. They're small and simple. Wired or wireless for a quick and easy way to put your existing RS-232 devices on your network.

- Wireless I/O:

802.11 remote I/O modules from Advantech. Digital I/O, counter and pulse inputs, relay outputs. Use 802.11b to handle remote I/O functions wirelessly. A perfect fit for mobile and temporary installations.
